Royal Black
Royal Black chilli seeds. The Royal Black (C. Annuum) is simply put a stunning plant. This plant is a no fuss, low maintenance chilli plant. The Royal Black in our experience is a consistent grower. Plants reach an expected height of around 50 - 60cm. The plant is compact and dense. One of the plants striking looks come from its beautiful shape and structure. The amazing black/green foliage and branches also are very striking. Pods also are a jet black colour until they ripen to a dark red colour. Pods are upward facing, bullet shaped. The plant has a very subtle blush of dark green on the foliage, but is pretty predominantly black - which is what makes this plant so amazing. As mentioned, it is also fairly low maintenance and does not seem to suffer any issues with pests and disease - although locusts do love to feed on pods and branches (this seems to be a phenomena with most dark/purple plants in our experience). When fully ripe, pods change colour from black to a dark red. This also is very appealing aesthetically as you get this jet black plant with these red pods that just pop visually when looking at the plant. The plant has a good yield of pods. Ornamentally, this has to be one of the most beautiful plants we have seen. Size wise, these plants are super for balconies and for growing in pots.
In the kitchen, this plant also has a place. It is not as much a culinary plant as it is ornamental. In other words, the chillies can be used for cooking, but this is not a specialty chilli in the kitchen. These chillies will produce a great general purpose chilli powder or chilli flakes that has a nice pepper aroma and has quite a straight forward pepper flavour about them. The burn from these chillies is very typically Annuum, with a peppery burn that is very much front of the mouth. Heat wise, these chillies will come in at around 20,000 - 40,000SHU. But as mentioned, this chilli ticks all the boxes in the looks department. If it is a beautiful chilli plant you are looking for - then look no futher!

* The container sizes above are sugested sizes that are reasonable and accessible for most growers (taking price, space, ecological/environmental impact into consideration). Not everyone can look at growing in huge containers. If you can justify growing in larger containers - there are no limitations on container sizes. You may however, rather look at growing in soil as an option in these instances. Using large amounts of potting medium will come with ecological/environmental impact, which you may wish to take into consideration.
