When is correct time to start growing chillies?
In South Africa, our chilli growing season (outdoors) runs from September/October - April/May. Certain parts of South Africa are blessed with a warmer climate in winter, which means you can continue to grow through winter. Unfortunately most of the country experiences frost and sub zero temperatures April - July/August, which means plants will die off. Essentially night time temperatures have to be above 10ºC (preferably 12ºC).
As a general guideline, you will need to start your germination 1-2 months before first week of October. Which means, the best time to start your seeds indoors is July/August. This gives your plants 1-2 months to grow indoors before planting them out first week of October.
If you are equipped to grow chillies indoors with grow lights and heaters etc, then you can grow throughout the year.
