Rocoto Lucento Oblong Red Chilli Seeds
Rocoto Lucento Oblong Red Chilli Seeds. An unusual and mysterious cultivar of Rocoto (C. Pubescens) discovered at a market in Riobamba, Central Ecuador. We have it that this Rocoto was locally referred to as “Aji Lucento”. Or at least this is what the original collectors understood the name to be. In any case, it is the name we were given and shall use. Rocoto seeds can be a little more temperamental to get out of the starting blocks as they have very thick and hard seed coats. This cultivar is no exception and may just be a little more temperamental to germinate. So, our advice is to presoak the seeds before germination and to plant seeds to a depth of 7-10mm with rocoto seeds. Once Rocotos get going, they are a pleasure, but it is the beginning most growers struggle with. This variety grows well into a decent medium to large size plant. Easily 1-1,2m. We have it that this cultivar will grow very tall and turn into a massive producer if grown in soil. As with most Rocotos, beautiful purple flowers are a given. This cultivar is a good producer. Pods are elongated ovaloid in shape with a gently wave to the form. Pods are roughly 45x20mm in size (possibly larger) and ripen from green through to a deep rich red colour. Flavourwise these pods are delicious. Very fruity with an unmistakably Rocoto mineralyness. Superb for making sauces or used for salsas.

* The container sizes above are sugested sizes that are reasonable and accessible for most growers (taking price, space, ecological/environmental impact into consideration). Not everyone can look at growing in huge containers. If you can justify growing in larger containers - there are no limitations on container sizes. You may however, rather look at growing in soil as an option in these instances. Using large amounts of potting medium will come with ecological/environmental impact, which you may wish to take into consideration.
