Prairie Fire Chilli Seed. The Prairie Fire is a very attractive Ornamental Capsicum Annuum. Seeds from this variety germinate well and plant growth is rapid, producing pods early in the season. Pods of the Prairie Fire are teardrop shaped and point upward (Facing Heaven) that grow densely on the canopy of the plant. Pods start out off white in colour and eventually turn bright red when fully ripe. While pods appear early on in the season on the plant, pods can take some time to fully ripen. The Prairie Fire is a small, compact plant with heights that can reach around ±20cm in our experience - maybe more.
Due to its small size, the Prairie Fire is well suited for growing in pots and is ideally suited for a sunny kitchen window or balcony, where it will be eye catching and add aesthetic. But, this chilli plant is not just an ornamental, it has a place in the kitchen too.
When cut open the smell from these chillies is typically peppery with a slight citrus aroma. No hidden nuances here, flavour wise this chilli has a clean straight down the line pepperiness about it. Heat wise we estimate this chilli is somewhere between 50,000 and 90,000 SHU. The burn from this chilli is strong and peppery and well rounded coating the entire mouth. A lingering burn that can be expected to last a good 5 - 7 minutes.
In the kitchen, these chillies can be used fresh or dried. Pods do dry very well and would lend themselves to making chilli flakes or powder. These chillies would be well suited for spicy Asian dishes, where a clean strong cayenne style peppery burn is suited. A few of these little fire crackers should do the trick!
