Fushimi

Fushimi chilli seeds. The Fushimi (C. Annuum) originates from Fushimi, which is a suburb of Kyoto, Japan. This variety has good germination and growth in our experience. These will mature into an medium size plant that is like a cayenne in its appearance and pod structure. A good producer of pods than are long (±6cm) and cayenne like. Pods mature from grass green to red when fully ripe. Now, this variety is very well know for use in stir fries, tempura and sautee cooking when green. While we have tasted the ripe red varieties, it has to be mentioned that this chilli should be eaten when green. This is the correct way to eat these chillies. Red pods are sweet and fruity without any heat that we could detect - and will taste rather unusual in our humble opinion. But as mentioned, the specialty of these chillies is to eat them green. Green pods are herbaceous and sweet tasting. Traditionally used in stir fries and eaten battered in tempura batter and deep fried, these pods can also be sauteed with soy sauce and sesame oil or roasted on the griddle with a drizzling of oil and sea salt. This way, these chillies taste sensational and are very special indeed!

You may however, rather look at growing in soil as an option in these instances. Using large amounts of potting medium will come with ecological/environmental impact, which you may wish to take into consideration.
