Canario Chilli Seeds. The Canario (C. Pubescens) is a chilli that was discovered at a market in Canario, Gran Canaria. It does very much resemble the Rocoto Manzano Yellow (Amarillo). This is a very nice variety indeed. Whether or not it is the same as the Rocoto Manzano, we can not say for sure. While fruit are very similar, plant structure does seem to be different. Our plant was very low strung and not tree like at all - as should be the case with Rocoto Manzano. But this can also just be due to growing conditions. In any case, this variety can be tricky to germinate in our experience. This was the first season in three years that we have managed to germinate this variety - so please bear this in mind. But, once germinated this variety does grow nicely. A slow growing plant in our experience, so will do well with early germination - as it seems to take a long grow season to produce. The good news about Rocotos (C. Pubescens) though, is that they do grow well through our milder winters. This plant is a C. Pubescens - so, characteristically these plants have tiny hairs all over the leaves and stems/branches. This is probably what makes them more tollerant of cooler weather. The fruit are a lovely roundish apple shape. Size wise, these pods are about 4 - 5cm in diametre. Another characteristic is the dark brown/blackis seeds that are characteristic of the C. Pubescens genus. The fruit ripen from a green to beautiful yello/golden yellow once fully ripened. Crunchy, fleshy, juicy, thick skinned fruit that are just perfect for salsas and sauces. A very pleasant burn and heat to these chillies. The flavour and texture of these chillies is superb. Lovely fruity flavour with citrus undertones. This is a stunning variety that is just amazing to grow and enjoy!
