Biquinho Vermelho chilli seeds. The Biquinho Vermelho (C.Chinense) originates from South America. This is one of those really beautiful and very unusual chillies. Literally translated it means "Little Bird Beak", Vermelho meaning Red. The shape of these pods is very unique and unusual indeed. This variety germinates and grows well in our experience. It matures into a small, compact and bushy plant with hundreds of small pointy pods. This is definitely a big producer in our experience. Pods ripen from a pale light green into a bright red. Definitely a looker this plant - and a rare one at that! Once opened, the smell is very pleasant. The aroma of these pods reminds us very much of that citrus/banoffee smell characteristic of Scotch Bonnets/Fataliis/Cumaris. These pods have a crunchy medium flesh to them. The flavour is subtle and very much reminiscent of Chinense flavours. Sweet, citrus and floral. In fact, close your eyes and eat these and they taste so much like Habaneros/Scotch Bonnets that you wait in anticipation of the heat to hit. But this chilli has virtually no heat! It is very much like the Trinidad Perfume in fact. Except this chilli does have a very slight burn. 50 - 200 SHU max, if that. So, if you love the flavour of the Chinenses, but you don't tolerate that kind of heat - this is a great option. In the kitchen, we would recommend these beautiful red pods to be used fresh in salads and salsas. The colour would look super and the flavours would lend themselves without the over powering burn. We think it would be a shame to cook these pods as the flavour is just too subtle. There could be an option to pickle these? Whatever the outcome in the kitchen, these pods and this plant are an absolute pleasure to grow in the garden and will turn heads for sure. This is a special and unusual variety that gets our thumbs up!
