Red Savina Chilli Seeds. The "Red Savina" (C. Chinese) held the title as the hottest chilli in the world in the Guinness World Records from 1994 - 2006 with a reputed top heat of 577,000 SHU (350,000 - 577,000 SHU). This claim has been challenged by certain entities claiming that they could not ascertain this Scoville rating in tests conducted, but it is clear to us in a taste test, that this variety is without a doubt a very hot Habanero indeed. The Red Savina was knocked off its perch by the Ghost Pepper (Bhut Jolokia) in 2006. While the Red Savina no longer ranks as a superhot these days, it is still a very nice variety to have in your collection and a very tasty one also. We love growing this variety as it has a really lovely small, manageable, compact and bushy plant structure. So good for growing in pots for those with space restrictions!
These small to medium sized plants are suitable for garden and container growing. Seedlings grow into nice compact bushy low slung plants with an average height of around 50cm. Plants yield very nicely in our experience. Pods start off green and ripen through orange to a lovely fire engine red once fully ripe. Pods are essentially heart shaped with slight undulations/folds. Pods are fleshy and crunchy with a super fruity aroma. We noted a slight minerally / sulphur smell on these which was unusual but not offensive. Flavour is very fruity with hints of citrus. The burn on these pods is intense with a strong burn around the mouth. The burn is typically chinense. Immediate, intense and quick to subside. This may be out of the comfort zone for most people. These chillies are no strangers in the kitchen. Used sparingly in cooking, these chillies add instant heat to a dish. Pods can be dried and turned into powder, or used fresh to make a very hot chilli sauce or salsa.
