Hot Black Scorpion Tongue Chilli Seeds. This is a Capsicum Annuum variety of unknown origins. We don't know if this is related to the Hot White Scorpion Tongue, it certainly looks very similar - apart from the variation in colour and slight pheno difference. The name as it has been inherited is somewhat misleading, as these pods are not black - but purple at the onset. A dark purple, but purple none the less. The Hot Black Scorpion Tongue is a very structured plant that has dark purple and green stem and branches, beautiful green leaves with purple veins and amazing light purple flowers with white centres and gray/lavender stamen. This is a very striking, medium sized plant that is as suited in a pot on a balcony as it is in the garden. This plant will reach 60 - 80cm, possibly higher. A well temperament plant that germinates and grows well. A rapid grower with few hassles in our experience - so definitely one for beginners. Pods start dark to bright purple in colour. Pheno type is smooth, oval to conoid with a snub end early season, developing into irregular pods with subtle folds later on in the season. We don't know if this is due to early season pods being different to the true pheno or if there is some unstable traits coming through the variety. Pods ripen to red through a series of colour changes. Variegated colour changes can be evident and range from dark purple to yellow and orange to a final solid red or variegated red & black. A good producer in our experience, yielding dozens of pods on one plant.

Cutting open the pods reveals a thin to medium skinned pod with little placenta and lots of seeds. An interesting and unusual phenomena of these pods was the fact that all the pods had a purple colouration running along the placenta inside the pods - quite unusual and striking. The aroma is fresh and peppery with a fruity undertone. The falvour profile of the chillies is fresh, crisp and peppery with the occasional bursts of floral/perfume coming through. This makes us think that this variety may have been crossed with a Caribbean Chinense of sorts. But this is not conclusive. Heat wise we estimate these chillies range around the 50,000 - 90,000 SHU mark. The burn from the chillies is back of the throat, radiating afterwards to other parts of the mouth and lingering on the tongue. A firm burn that is up there with the hot annuums and possibly has a little chinense that gives it that characteristic throat burn. But again, the origins of this chilli are unknown and our surmising is not based on fact. Whatever the background of these chillies, it is a good tasting chilli that will most certainly have its place in the kitchen.

The heat and burn of these chillies will not go a miss in Asian cuisine. The various colours may add some esthetic elements to a dish. Pods do dry well in direct sunlight and may do better with drying if butterflied open first. Thin to medium skinned chillies can go fusty if not opened when drying. The dried pods will make a super chilli powder and judging by their final deep crimson red colour, will make a super rich red chilli powder.
